Times Square Ball Drop Began as Publicity Stunt
Former New York Times publisher Adolph Ochs moved the newspaper’s headquarters to 42nd and 7th and successfully lobbied the city to rename the location “Times Square.” For publicity, he began throwing New Year’s Eve parties with fireworks in the area starting in 1904. When the city prohibited fireworks two years later, the tradition shifted to lowering a large, illuminated ball to signal the end of the year.
